Argaw and Rachel arrived on the 19th of January! For those of you who do not know them, they are friends we met while we were in Bible College in Hungary. It's nice to have familiar faces with us now, although we have met some incredibly WONDERFUL people while we awaited their arrival. There is still one teammate to arrive, Steve from England, and he will be here on February 9th. We have moved to Awasa, south of Addis Ababa, and finally have a house to rent. It's great to finally unpack!

We were able to attend one of the Ethiopian holidays called Timket. It's the Orthodox Church's holy day and has to do with the Ark of the Covenant. The high priest marches from a field, where the ark was to stay overnight, back to the church with the ark in stow (it's actually a box hat he wears). We were able to watch this procession from a location in Addis called "Sidist Kilo" (6 mile), which is right close to the main Orthodox Church. As the procession passed, the police and guards instructed us to follow the pressing crowd back TOWARD the church (we were standing in the street meridian). Argaw's brother, Teshome, hesitated a moment and then asked the guard if we could, instead, cross the street and continue north - away from the crowd. He agreed. We continued on and had lunch before venturing back to the guesthouse for the evening. When we arrived home (some 5 hours later), we heard a news broadcast that stated a riot had broke out at the Sidist Kilo and 20 people had been killed. Just shortly after we left, about 15-20 minutes, is when the riot broke out... right in the area we had been standing! God's hand of protection was upon us that day... we praised Him for keeping us out of harms way. Please pray for Addis Ababa: after this riot there were 3 bombings in which several more people were killed... all in connection with what happened at Timket
Most of you know that Brian came down with a terrible bacterial infection. He is fully recovered now, but at the time he went through this illness, we weren't sure WHAT the outcome would be! Before moving to Awasa Brian had been ill for 2 days, but seemed to heal up pretty quickly. Then, 3 days after moving to Awasa, Brian comes down ill again - this time MUCH worse than the previous bout. We were able to have him diagnosed with immediate medication treatment, but not without a few scares in between. In the midst of being sick, the Lord gave Brian a Scripture verse to meditate on - Phil. 2:25-28. |
